Just-in-time coach marks for instructors
Problem
How might we:
- Make instructors aware of new features when they need to know about them
- Increase awareness of content that will replace an empty state in the instructor dashboard
- Help instructors discover features that might not be readily apparent

Solution
Coach marks that provide just-in-time guidance for identified pain points in our user journey map. They are dependent on data values displayed and instructor actions. We also added them for new features that might not be readily apparent.
This Start here message helps the instructor understand where to focus at first landing.
If an instructor explores the user interface, we take them back to the next logical step in the flow if they haven’t created assignments.
We used this empty state as an opportunity to explain when to return to view data and why it is useful.
We learned from testing that instructors didn’t realize they could also see performance information from the progress bar.
